Angela Collins’ journey is really inspiring! Starting sailing at 39 and falling in love with it, she not only immersed herself in the world of yachts but also made remarkable strides in the industry. By founding Angela Collins Yachts in 2000 and later establishing a yacht-building factory, she demonstrated impressive determination and vision. Despite limited initial capital, she grew her business through hard work and a deep passion for boats.
Her dedication to innovation is evident in the creation of both the Parlay 40 catamarans and the Lavranos 37 ft yacht, and her presence at boat shows in the USA highlighted her commitment to the global yachting community.
Now, her new venture in Cape Town, with the Lavranos design and the Tosca 39 cruising yacht, shows that Angela is not slowing down and continues to push forward. Her blend of technical knowledge and a genuinely friendly, approachable nature makes her stand out. Plus, her coastal skipper’s license and sailing expertise only add to her credibility. Her success seems rooted in her authenticity and passion, which her clients clearly respect and appreciate.

Mark Collins,I discovered my love for sailing in my early 40s, alongside my wife, Angela Collins. While we both took to it instantly, Angela was the one who really caught the sailing bug, eventually founding Angela Collins Yachts. A few years later, I joined her, and we’ve been partners in both business and life ever since. With Angela leading the yachting business, I focus on the technical and practical aspects, making us a strong team—at least, I hope so, as we’ve been happily married for 45 years! I also hold a Coastal Skipper’s License, and I can honestly say the ocean has a magical, peaceful pull that I can’t resist.

Knysna 500 Sailing Catamaran: A High-Performance, Versatile Cruiser
The Knysna 500 is a robust and highly versatile sailing catamaran, engineered for performance and comfort, making it a popular choice among serious sailors and cruising enthusiasts. Designed by the renowned South African boatbuilding company, Knysna Yachts, the 500 model combines cutting-edge technology with thoughtful design to deliver a premium cruising experience. Below is an overview of the key features that make the Knysna 500 a top contender in the performance catamaran market.
Design & Construction
The Knysna 500 features a fiberglass hull with a reinforced composite structure, ensuring both strength and weight efficiency. The catamaran’s hull shape is optimized for stability, reduced drag, and enhanced fuel efficiency under both motor and sail. This well-balanced design allows for smooth sailing in a variety of conditions, providing excellent comfort on long passages and during coastal cruising.
Performance & Handling
Equipped with a powerful rig and high-aspect ratio sails, the Knysna 500 offers outstanding upwind performance. Its sail plan, combined with the lightweight construction, ensures fast and efficient passage making, while the catamaran’s twin engines provide precise maneuverability under power. The low draft allows for greater access to shallow cruising grounds, while the wide beam ensures exceptional stability at anchor and underway.
The catamaran’s twin-hull configuration allows it to offer superior comfort and reduced motion in choppy seas, a critical factor for long-duration sailing and liveaboard cruising. The Knysna 500 is particularly adept at high-efficiency cruising with excellent tracking and responsiveness to both wind and helm input.
Interior Layout & Comfort
The interior layout of the Knysna 500 is designed for maximum space utilization without compromising comfort. The saloon is spacious, well-ventilated, and light-filled, thanks to expansive windows and open-plan design. The galley is fully equipped for extended cruising, with ample storage, top-of-the-line appliances, and a functional layout that makes meal prep a breeze even in motion.
The vessel features three or four well-appointed cabins, with the owner’s suite typically located in the starboard hull, offering privacy and expansive living quarters. The guest cabins are designed to ensure comfort and privacy for multiple guests or crew, with excellent ventilation and access to light. There are also well-designed heads and showers that provide additional comfort on extended voyages.
Technology & Navigation
The Knysna 500 is designed with the modern sailor in mind. Integrated navigation systems, autopilot, AIS, and radar systems come standard, ensuring that the catamaran is equipped for safe and efficient cruising in both familiar waters and distant offshore environments. The helm stations are ergonomically designed for ease of use, and the boat comes with a fully integrated electrical system to support a range of auxiliary systems onboard.
Maintenance & Durability
The construction methods and materials used in the Knysna 500 ensure long-lasting durability, requiring relatively low maintenance compared to other vessels in its class. The hull and deck are designed to resist wear from both saltwater and UV exposure. Systems such as the plumbing and electrical are designed with durability in mind, ensuring trouble-free operation over the long term.
If you’re looking for a yacht that blends elegance with adventure, the Knysna 500 is the perfect choice. Contact Angela at

How to Buy a Yacht: Key Considerations

Buying a yacht is an exciting venture, but it’s essential to approach it with careful consideration of your budget, desired size, and realistic expectations. Here are the important aspects to keep in mind:

  1. Budgeting Wisely: Your budget will significantly influence your options. Determine how much you can comfortably spend, factoring in not just the purchase price but also maintenance, insurance, and docking fees. For smaller budgets, you may find older models or smaller vessels that still offer a great experience, but be prepared for potential repairs and upgrades.

  2. Choosing the Right Size: The size of the yacht should align with your intended use—whether it’s for solo trips, family outings, or entertaining guests. Smaller yachts can be more affordable and easier to manage, while larger ones offer more space and amenities but come with higher costs. Consider how often you plan to use the yacht and for what purposes.

  3. Realistic Expectations: If you’re working with a limited budget, it’s important to have realistic expectations about what you can afford. While a brand-new, luxury yacht may be out of reach, you can find good value in pre-owned models. Increasing your budget slightly can open up more options, including better condition boats and more features.

  4. The Role of a Yacht Broker: Engaging with an experienced yacht broker, such as Angela Collins Yachts, can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of yacht purchasing. Brokers bring industry expertise, helping you identify suitable options that fit your budget and preferences. They can also provide insights into market trends and potential pitfalls, ensuring a smoother buying process.

In summary, when buying a yacht, align your budget and size with your expectations. With the right guidance from a knowledgeable broker, you can find a vessel that meets your needs and offers a rewarding boating experience.

How to Sell a Yacht: The Importance of Choosing the Right Broker

Selling a yacht can be a complex process, but choosing the right broker can make all the difference. In the bustling world of yachting, it’s essential to partner with someone who not only understands the market but also genuinely appreciates the nuances of the sailing lifestyle. Here’s why working with a knowledgeable and reputable broker, like Angela and Mark Collins at Angela Collins Yachts, is crucial for a successful sale.

1. Realistic Valuation: The Key to Attracting Buyers

A good broker will provide a realistic valuation based on market trends, the yacht’s condition, and other vital factors. This valuation is not just a number—it’s your first step toward attracting serious buyers.

2. Access to a Network of Clients

An experienced broker has a broad network and can tap into potential buyers that you might not reach on your own. They know where to find serious inquiries and how to present your yacht to the right audience.

3. Effective Marketing Platforms

In today’s digital age, visibility is crucial. A knowledgeable broker utilizes formidable marketing platforms to showcase your yacht, ensuring it stands out in a crowded market.

4. Reputation in the Sailing Community

Choosing a broker with a solid reputation in the sailing industry can give you an edge. Angela and Mark Collins are not just brokers; they are passionate sailors with years of experience in building and selling yachts, which adds credibility and trust.

5. Understanding the Broker’s Commitment

It’s important to remember that a broker only earns their income when a sale is concluded. The time, effort, and expertise they invest in your sale deserve appreciation and recognition.

Conclusion

Selling a yacht is a significant decision, and partnering with a knowledgeable broker can streamline the process and maximize your returns. If you’re ready to take the next step, consider reaching out to professionals like Angela and Mark Collins, who bring a wealth of experience and a passion for sailing to the table.
